Mobile Monetization

What happened with Instagram is a dream that many apps out there dream of achieving. But when the sole purpose is to achieve monetary gains rather than form a permanent base in the business, then selling out when the going is good is the wisest course.  Instagram’s instant success was not exceptional, it was their valuation. The mobile app was bought out for one billion dollars by Facebook just within just two years since inception. But how long will the money last? Instagram is already history after Facebook launched their mobile camera application, which was a huge disappointment for Instagram creators who had hoped that Facebook would continue running the application. Just goes to show: win some, lose some.

Not all businesses want to be as short lived either. So it is they have to devise strategies that will serve to upkeep them for a longer duration, preferable, a lifetime of steady income generation to see them through till retirement. For this, they are willing to bide their time and struggle in the process. As is the case with mobile monetization. Application developers can relate to this, as they strive to achieve profits through mobile advertisements. That is not to say it will not happen. It’s simply that mobile applications have not been around long enough to gain that kind of financial attention from advertisers as on other forms of media such as the PC and television.

Whereas advertising spending as a bare minimum at 1 per cent, mobile consultants assess the average time spent by mobile consumers is 23 per cent on a daily basis. This poses a challenge in trying to bridge the gap between mobile advertisement investment and viewership. The question as to how many such consumers will actually click on an advertisement and then turn into buyers is unanswered. What is most assuring is that the quantity of companies investing in mobile advertisement has increased over the last two years and web analysts believe that the investment will continue to rise.

Since mobile market is still a novice industry, the field is open for marketers to scope. One instance is an Asian ad network, ‘Metaps’ that promotes smartphone applications in over 25 countries by providing incentives to consumers when they download or register. Other advertising platforms have partnered with game engines in providing a compatible platform for iOS and Android developers to create apps easily and quickly. Through integrated software development kits that include advertisements and rewards. Other ways to monetize through mobile include: directly purchasing from within the application, for instance, a catalog app, companies using branded custom apps through which to offer their services and utility apps that offer entertainment services such as event updates and games. Eventually, advertisement will come to play a major role on mobile, but for now, businesses need such alternative choices to tap into.

Is Apple Isolating Users Through Limited Content?

No one knows for sure what the up and approaching iOS6 will have, but they are sure of what it will not have, which is, its competitors’ services. Already Apple ousted Google Maps and instead indicated they have their very own mapping technology as pre installed application on iOS6 devices.
This is now followed by the termination of their contract with the YouTube app, another Google acquisition. Apple confirmed they intended to use Vimeo, acquired by Apple a few months back.
Very brave decisions. Apple Inc may have weighed the pros against the cons, but can’t say they can be commended. Sure there’s valid reason behind them, such as excessive advertising of Google AdSense.  Also Google has the upper hand to promote their content over others. The previous month’s Score report showed Google in the top slots in the US online video ranking and Vimeo though slowly gaining viewership is down at 10.
But in their bid to be independent and focus on high standards, they are not just isolating themselves, but the users. Other Smart phones have a large share in the market because they cater to the masses. YouTube ranks highest among the video websites in the world. That such popular apps have been discarded will prevent people from using iOS technology. No matter how brilliant their iOS apps, very soon they will find themselves losing their largest share of Smartphone customers.
User needs should be given top priority. Everything is about connecting and integrating. People want an expansive and extensive reach wherever possible. This was earlier achieved through the internet, became more so through social media and games apps which proved more capable in allowing people to share content. Most importantly, users want as many choices available so they can decide which service to use. Excluding popular apps and installs will just leave them wondering what it is they are missing out.
At this point, media has concluded this to be more than healthy competition. They consider it as outright ‘rivalry’. Most affected are the end users. What they could be offered instead are the best of both worlds. Perhaps third party Mobile Application Developers could make some merger apps that could be native to iOS and compatible with Android OS. This is still early speculation and there are chances for all kind of possibilities to develop. Maybe even an iOS-Android Smartphone…!?!

BlackBerry Playbook — another Day, another Update

It’s true — the heart of the tablet is in the OS. And the heart of OS is in the apps. BlackBerry’s attempts at improving their PlayBook 2.0 and subsequent upgrade to 2.1.0, is a reminder of both.

Edits without credits

Tech updates are much like editing an article: both are intended to improve the quality. But this thankless
job is not given due credit even when it involves having to rewrite the entire article in the name of editing. Just like that, sometimes it’s better to simply create new apps than to recompile and transfer to another OS especially when the Application Development fails to gel on multiple Oss.

At the start of this year, BlackBerry Tablet 2.0 OS provided the opportunity for app developers to transfer Android apps to BlackBerry Application Development World. Brilliant idea that did not entice enough Android apps into the BlackBerry fold. Of those that did make the attempt reported crashes and bugs.

Apps without ads

This was perhaps the most disincentive term set by RIM.  Android developers mainly rely on Android app monetization through ads and in-app purchases. To provide the same for free on PlayBook or charge directly was enough to discourage porting their apps.

But the scenario isn’t all dismal. Android Community reported more than 800 apps successfully installed on PlayBook and social app integration was among the best of them.

Success without conditions

Needless to say, one of the requisites for OS compatibility was whether the same app will work on the mobile device as well as the tablet. Some apps do not mention that, making app discovery turn into an unpleasant experience.

While some terms and requisites were downright easy to implement, others resulted in a web of confusion. The developers were required to remove the name Android when transferring applications to PlayBook. But other developments were sending off red signals which brought app usage and development to a standstill on the device. One was RIM’s announcement three months ago that side-loading apps will no longer be permitted for Android apps on PlayBook. The reason for this was to control “app piracy”. Foresight on this might have controlled the situation but they must be credited for following best practices even during their dire need for apps.

Despite all this, things are looking up and efforts are still ongoing. Rooting or jail breaking the device has proven more successful, although not for all Android apps. Recent news of transferring Mobile Applications Development on PlayBook has also provided hope. Then there’s the gaming sector without which no app store is complete and PlayStation Games can now be played on the tablet.
